SiR – Her Too (EP) Review

SiR – Her Too (EP)

Released: 9 February 2017

In short: this nice as hell. This is my first go at SiR’s music; he came to my attention after signing to TDE in January 2017. Her Too is an awesome offering from fellow Inglewood native, SiR.

Musical review

Her Too begins with the funky, upbeat “New LA” featuring So. Cal native Anderson .Paak and Raleigh rapper King Mez. The EP takes a psychedelic turn on the second track, the spatial, melodic  “Canvas“, the song commences under low synths and light keys. The light chimes and subtle bass guitar are beautiful contrasts to the vocalist, as SiR gently, yet intently creeps deeper into his serenade utilizing a piercing falsetto to string along his melodies. The lyrical content is praiseworthy in it’s own right, the theme of the song revolves around SiR worshipping his woman as a piece of art, letting her know there’s nothing that he can do to to make her “portrait” look more perfect – all he can do is “add a little color to the canvas“.

At times, I get neo-soul vibes from Her Too. Other times I get Frank Ocean vibes with the signature double-layered crooning over sing-talky vocals, specifically on “W$ Boi“. The Masego track “Ooh Nah Nah” is a collaboration made in R&B heaven. Masego always brings creative vocals, lyrical concepts on love, and original live instrumentation – I’m extremely anticipating a Masego LP.

Verdict

Her Too is a vibey R&B EP soaked in sensual R&B melodies. Sitting at only 19 minutes and 6 tracks, it’s long enough to keep you happy as an EP, but short enough to make you crave a full LP. And I think that’s exactly what the executives over at TDE, and SiR wanted.
