Bounze Houze is a succinct, intermediate effort from Mid-City, LA’s own F.Y.I.

F.Y.I. is quite the various emcee. Not only is he able to put words together naturally and fluidly, he also possesses the ability to inject bits of humor and personableness into his rhymes – a feat rarely accomplished even by today’s mega-MCs.

Critical Breakdown

Throughout Bounze Houze, F.Y.I. strikes me as an MC who’s very in-tune with his own sound – I have almost no qualms about the production on this project. Although, there aren’t any beats that WOW me either (granted, I really like the beat and bassline on “Groove Back”). From an artistry standpoint, I appreciate F.Y.I’.s self-awareness in picking beats that he sounds great rapping over. It’s common to hear rappers pick the most “banging” beats regardless of their own cadence and delivery.

On the intro, “Gloweisha”, listeners are taken on an adventure – it gives me comic-book theme-song vibes. The drum pattern and overall sonic queues of the song also feels a bit like Tyler, The Creator‘s attempts at electropop, specifically “Igor’s Theme.

F.Y.I‘s combination of natural MC’ing mixed with hurried, static drums, humor, and down-to-earthness draws a strikingly similar comparison to ATCQ‘s Q-TipIn fact, at multiple points on this albums, F.Y.I.’s ability to approach light-hearted topics, such as girls and break-ups, in a real yet gently humorous manner on songs like “Groove Back” instantly reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest.

At just 7 songs, Bounze Houze is just a snack. But my gut tells me that F.Y.I has the ability to cook-up a full-course meal! As a natural rhymer with an ear for production, I’m excited to hear what a full-length F.Y.I. project sounds like!
